Cycling requires overall strength, flexibility and balance. Pilates is a great compliment to your cycling as it works your body as a whole and improves postural alignment throughout a variety of motions. On the bike, this translates to more efficient performance. Pilates built into your training regimen both the on-and off-season will help build strength and improve alignment, with the added benefit during the season to stretch and release tight muscles whilst continuing to improve core strength.
Improving efficiency is so important, the more power you can produce with less effort, the faster you can travel for longer.
Pilates improves flexibility and posture, so it’s a great way to improve postural and muscular tightness and imbalances that cycling brings.
As fatigue sets in effort can become less efficient, as you pedal, your body will start to roll from side to side on your bike. In contrast, when you are still moving efficiently your legs will be turning the pedals smoothly whilst your head, shoulders and body remain still and secure, in doing so you are using less energy to propel your bike.
It is not just through the core where performance gains can be found. Pilates also encourages improved limb alignment when moving for improved stability. Making the movement more stable improves the movement pattern in your legs, stopping the knees and feet from turning or twisting during the pedal stroke. This delivers significant benefits in both force production and efficiency and also helps protect against potential knee or ankle injuries.
Cyclists frequently have lower bone mineral density than sportspeople in other disciplines; bones are softer and more susceptible to fractures. By adding some resistance based training, Pilates works well for this load will be put through these bones and joints which will increase bone mineral density, increase resilience and reduce the risk of fractures in crashes. Another advantage of using Pilates for resistance training is that it will improve muscle strength without increasing bulk, allowing you to improve your power to weight ratio.
Given the benefit of biking as light and strong as possible we will help you to begin improving your speed, efficiency and endurance whilst warding off injury
The longer you are able to maintain good form whilst cycling the more efficiently you will use your energy, and the further and faster you can go.
Pilates targets the core muscles that help stabilise you on your bike, keeping your spine in a stable position whilst your limbs move. So by improving your core strength, you can increase your power output. An increase in core strength also improves balance and therefore bike handling, always an advantage in both performance and safety cycling at all levels.
In Cycling you can suffer from tight hip flexors, necks and upper backs, caused by being hunched forward over the frame we will help stretch and lengthen these muscles, and also strengthen them so they don’t set tight and short, this is another good preventative measure to avoid injury.
